Shaking Up Your 2021: How To Go After The Career You Want

It can be difficult for many women to go after what they want in a career — especially mothers — in part because it’s still hard for women to get ahead in the business world. Unfortunately, some employers are still operating under the belief that women can’t, or won’t, put in long hours or hard work because they’d rather focus on their families or take time off to have babies, which sets us all back.

Some other women don’t ask for what they want for fear of coming across as too aggressive or being viewed as “hard to work with.” It’s important to keep in mind that no one can change your career path but you. If you’re unhappy in your current position or have recently been passed over for a promotion that you feel you deserved, it might be time to think about either moving on or making some big changes. And while it can be scary to think about taking a new path, just remember that sometimes change is necessary to create a better, more fulfilling life.

Here are some ways you can change up your career and get what you want.

Be direct

If you’re not typically a direct person, it’s important to learn how to communicate and talk openly to your boss about what you want. If you aren’t being challenged in your current position--or feel like your hard work isn’t being appreciated--set up a meeting and talk it over. Your supervisor may be able to provide some insight or help you make some positive changes.

Show off your work ethic

Working hard might come naturally to you, but if you’re putting in long hours and doing good work on a project, don’t be afraid to talk about it with your boss. Let them know that you’re willing to go the extra mile; this might be just the push towards giving you a little more responsibility, or putting you up for that promotion.

When your boss notices your hard work or praises you, make sure you respond with, “Thanks for noticing!” This shows them that you’re taking ownership of your job and everything you’ve put into it.

Consider going into business for yourself

For many women, the COVID-19 has led to unemployment. Some have had to quit their jobs to take care of their children at home, while others were laid off. If you are currently unemployed because of the pandemic, or you’re thinking about leaving your job, don’t write off the possibility of starting your own business.

Today, countless women are choosing to become entrepreneurs and take their futures into their own hands. Running your own business from home is well within your reach! To get started, you can flesh out your idea with a thorough business plan, and then file to create an LLC for your business. If you’re asking, “How long does it take to register LLC documents with the state?” then you’ll be happy to know that formation services can speed up this process by quite a bit.

Remember your worth

Making changes can take a toll on your emotions and your self-esteem, so it’s important to remember how valuable you are. Keep in mind all your accomplishments and stay focused on your goals and you can achieve anything.
