Amy Schumer on the Struggle of Going Back to Work after Giving Birth

Amy Schumer recently shared a heartfelt Instagram post in which she opens up about her experience with going back to her working life as a comedian and actress after giving birth to her son Gene.

"5 months today and like all moms I love him so much it hurts. I'm feeling strong and good and like I’m still a human being with interests and ambitions and goals I’m excited to reach. It’s felt good to be back at work."

While Schumer mainly focuses on the positive aspects of both being a mother as well as returning to the working world, she is also extremely open about the struggles she was facing within herself and from the outside when deciding to take up her job again.

"I was so worried about it and was afraid to go back after he was 3 months old. A couple days I’ve cried from missing him. But it’s mostly good to be back and the breaks energize me to be a better mom and appreciate our time even more."

When Schumer decided to perform a standup set only 2 weeks after giving birth, she received quite a bit of criticism for that professional decision. However, just like now, the actress decided to focus on spreading love and positivity instead of letting the personal attacks get her down.

“Sending out love to the moms shaming me for doing standup last night!”

While we are happy to hear that Amy Schumer is having a prevailingly enjoyable experience with balancing motherhood and her job, she also makes sure to acknowledge her privilege.

"I have it a lot easier than many people but I wanted to share my experience"

And it is this sharing of personal experience that is incredibly valuable to other mothers and working women out there, because it helps normalize the struggles and considerations that are involved in making the decision of if and when to take up work again.

Whether you personally decide to be a stay at home mom or return to your job after 3 months, 6 months or even 2 years, in the end it all comes down to your specific circumstances. There is no wrong or right decision, but hearing about other moms' experiences sure can help in the process of making a choice.

So, like Amy Schumer at the end of her sincere Instagram post, we would like to invite you to share your experience with going back to work as a mom, or deciding not to do so.
